ABSTRACT: China is playing a more and more important role in the global development, which makes it much urgent to study and learn how to spread a more favorable Chinese image to the world. This thesis applies method of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and mathematic statistics to analyze addresses of Xi Jinping. The first part gave a brief introduction on the research background and theory of CDA. Secondly, it elaborated the statistics collection of Xi Jinping’s speech and categorized by its theme and analyzed foreign sayings, Chinese idioms and stories quoted in his speeches. Thirdly, it discussed modalities in English versions of Xi Jinping’s speeches by model verbs, tense and imperative tone. Fourthly, the paper gives examples on how transformation was made through nominalization and passivization. Fifthly, it illustrated how China’s image was spread to the world from three aspects. Lastly, the paper summarized and concluded that there is potential and space to build a positive and friendly Chinese image and improve international communication capacities and influences in the future.
