ABSTRACT

Based on the social cognitive theory, this paper employs the variables of exercise duration and frequency to construct a mechanism model of the influence of fair play (FP) awareness on students related attitudes and behaviors when participating in sports. Students (n = 317) aged from 10 - 18 years in 17 different schools filled in questionnaires regarding FP variables. Factors which may have impacts on students’ fair play attitudes and behaviors were measured using linear regression analysis. Path coefficient analysis was then adopted to examine the hypothesized relationships among the study variables. The research conclusion shows that the overall value of fairness has a positive impact on the formation of fair play awareness, and the three dimensions proposed in the theoretical model: compliance with rules, respect, and equal participation all have a significant positive correlation; the number of years of participation in sports has a direct impact on the formation of fair competition awareness, and the frequency of participating in sports has a partial impact on fair competition awareness; compliance with rules, respect, and equal participation awareness have a significant impact on most factors of fair competition attitudes and behaviors. The conclusions of the study have certain implications for the realization of the educational function of fair play values in sports in the future.
