ABSTRACT

As a critical period for language learning, primary school students are characterized by their plasticity and strong curiosity, which highlights the importance of grasping the key period of learning foreign languages. Cultivating good English learning habits from an early age also greatly benefits students’ English learning. However, there exist many problems in phonetics teaching and usage in primary schools, despite the fact that most primary schools in the author’s city require students to start learning English from grade one. This study conducted a survey of elementary school students at West Experimental Primary School in the city, which revealed that most teachers adopt traditional English teaching methods, while parents do not attach much importance to phonetics teaching. To address these issues, the author proposes strategies for emphasizing phonetics, teaching effectively, introducing new content, and practicing smartly.
