ABSTRACT: This qualitative study examines the role of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) in reducing female genital mutilation (FGM) in two regions of Côte d’Ivoire. Through interviews and focus groups conducted with 216 participants, the research shows that VSLAs offer economic alternatives to traditional excisers and promote community dialogue. The authors conclude that while economic empowerment facilitates the abandonment of FGM, it must be accompanied by continuous social awareness and education.
