ABSTRACT: Modern ports operation relies on accurate weight measurement to ensure cargos are delivered with dependability and integrity. The weighbridges systems have been playing crucial roles in ensuring the revenue generation, honest trading, regulations compliance and operational accountability in ports. Nevertheless, conventional weighbridge systems have been tokenized, hacked, and nontransparent because of improper measures against the willful misrepresentation of the weights by brokers or even the sometimes-unauthorized access to the systems. Such drawbacks have led to financial losses, regulatory disturbances, and the trust of stakeholders is eroded. Hence, a novel blockchain-based approach has been introduced in this study, the proposed approach exploits Hyperledger Fabric framework to protect the weighbridge system data and preserve its immutability. The proposed approach also enables data tracking and auditing, thus providing port authorities and customs with a unique view of the data history, which in turn, leads to greater accountability. The proposed approach has been tested through experiments and the results reveal that Hyperledger Fabric effectively diminishes data hijack incidents, guarantees same data in all nodes, and produces full audit trails for verifiability.
