ABSTRACT: Photochemical bromination of toluene up to 300 mmol per run in aqueous biphasic system formed benzyl bromide of sufficient purity to be used directly for benzylations without any purification. 1-Methylnaphthalene and acetophenone react similarly. An approach to (R) and (S) 1-O-triphenylmethyl-glycerol is presented based on L- and D-xylose.
