ABSTRACT: This study, focused on the criminal dynamics involving the disappearance of seven inmates in a penitentiary in the state of Roraima, Brazil, aims to delve into the social artifact of reputation building that legitimizes deaths perpetrated by the Brazilian state, as well as to understand the practice of forced disappearance as its facilitator. With a focus on the roles of the press and the Judiciary, a parallel is drawn between the construction of the enemy figure against left-wing militants during the civil-military dictatorship and that against people deprived of liberty in contemporary Brazil.
