ABSTRACT: Over the last decade, there has been an appreciable shift towards correcting the under-representation of women in the mining sector. Despite the advocacy many goals and aspirations, few companies have been able to achieve their aspirational targets of female representation and promotion. This study explores the structural barriers to female promotion. It utilizes qualitative methodology with an epistemology grounded in leadership, and talent management. Results highlighted structural barriers within the mining sector which are linked to gender biases, bullying, absence of support and opaque procedures. A framework is presented which is aimed at four pillars of action based on support, skills, structure and systems. When applied well, the multiplier effect of female promotion within the mining sector can create meaningful change and epitomize the benefits of diversity, across multiple demographics.
