Abstract: |
This present study attempts to examine the
effect of sanctioning systems on trust and cooperative behaviors in a public
goods dilemma by using an experiment paradigm of “removing the sanctions”.
Three experimental conditions, no-sanction, low sanction and high sanction,
were used. 96 undergraduate students participated in the experiment, and the
participants were randomly assigned to 24 groups with four persons each group.
The results show that participants exhibited higher level of trust in others in
two sanction conditions than in no-sanction condition. However when the
sanctioning system was removed, the level of trust in others decreased
significantly. In a similar way, the sanctioning system undermined cooperation
and seemed particularly true when initial sanction was high.
