Abstract: Due to energy shortage and global warning, the energy saving and carbon reduction issue is becoming an urgent theme, and especially smart grid is regarded as one of the emerging and practicable solutions. This paper mainly focuses on the application of information and communication technology, termed ICT, to smart grid. We begin with the brief introduction to smart grid, such as definition and communication architecture. Then, we address the standard and technology under development, and followed by numerous potential and promising research topics. Finally, this paper summarizes the challenges that we may face when developing smart grid, and gives a short conclusion.
