Abstract: The Point-to-Point Protocol provides the function of authentication and dynamic address assignment. And at this aspect, the Point-to-Point Protocol becomes the most widely used protocol of data link layer in wide area networks. It is of great significance to realize these functions in HF data links. A deep research is taken on the third generation of HF data link protocols, the working mechanism and process of the data link protocols are analyzed in detail. Challenges and feasibility are discussed while using these functions of Point-to-Point Protocol in HF data links. Based on the analysis of Point-to-Point Protocol and xDL protocol, a reliable and efficient protocol (PPP Over xDL) used for HF data links is designed. The new protocol is for providing the function of authentication and dynamic address assignment in HF networks. The implementation method, which is based on finite state machine (FSM), for PPP Over xDL protocol is given in the end.
