Admission Delay and Profile of Stroke Patients Admitted to the Medical-Surgical Emergency Department of Donka National Hospital ()
ABSTRACT
Introduction: Stroke remains a major public health issue, particularly in Africa. Our study aimed to analyze the admission delay and profile of stroke patients admitted to the Medical-Surgical Emergency Department of Donka National Hospital. Materials and Methods: This was a 6-month descriptive prospective study conducted from October 5, 2021, to March 5, 2022. Results: The hospital frequency of stroke was 45 cases (2.4%). The mean age was 63.3 ± 15.3 years, with a female predominance (53.3%, M/F ratio: 0.8). Hypertension (87.6%) and diabetes (34.5%) were the most common comorbidities. Loss of consciousness (76.1%), motor deficits (74.3%), and aphasia (53.1%) were the most frequent admission symptoms. The mean admission delay was 61.4 ± 59.5 hours. Ischemic stroke accounted for 69% of cases. The mean time to perform brain CT scans was 33.7 ± 44.1 hours. In-hospital mortality was 31.1%. Conclusion: Stroke remains a significant and consequential pathology. Utilizing the collected data can improve stroke prevention and management quality in Guinea.
