Special Issue on Impact and Technologies of High Speed Rail

High speed rail systems have been developed in many countries for many years. A nationwide high speed rail plan was proposed several years ago in the U.S. in which high speed corridors were designated. Recent approval of high speed rail system in California symbolizes a significant victory of high speed rail plan. It is reflected in this process from the proposal of the national high speed rail plan to the approval of California high speed rail plan that it is important for the public to understand the benefits that high speed rail system would bring in to a region economically, culturally, and environmentally. In addition, the high speed rail system to be built in the U.S. will not be simple duplicate or assembly of those from other countries. In the process of the development of high speed rail in the U.S., there will be adaption of the systems to the case in the U.S. and innovations that will make the high speed rail system more advanced than those in other countries.

This special issue will cover the peer review papers that will address the impacts of high speed rail systems that have been experienced and the new technical issues for which new solutions are developed. These impacts include those on society, culture and environment. The technical issues will cover those occur in planning, design, con-struction, operations, and maintenance of the system. The technologies to be considered include all possible forms of systems such as wheel and rail system and maglev. Examples of topics are: ridership forecasting and revenue projection, urban and economic development, noise technologies, new materials, new construction methods, maintenance systems, integrated security and safety systems, joint track usage, and system interoperability.
