                                                         Special Issue on

Hydrogen Production by Environmentally Friendly Methods

Since hydrogen is the cleanest and efficient energy carrier with a significantly reduced impact on the environment, it has been increasingly recognized as the energy carrier (fuel) of the future. Hydrogen is considered as an ideal alternative fuel for many energy converters because of its clean-burning nature, high conversion efficiency, lightweight, zero pollutant emission and potentially abundant production from other renewable resources. One of the main proposed applications of hydrogen is its use as ecologically clean fuel in power transport vehicles. It can be used as fuel either directly in Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) or, indirectly, to supply electricity using Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC), in which electricity is produced by electrochemical oxidation of hydrogen across a proton conducting membrane. However, there is no large-scale utilization of hydrogen because of several major problems, which constraint the development of hydrogen economy. One of them is how to produce hydrogen at low cost. Its explosive nature and large volume are the two main hindrances for the transportation and storage purposes. All above mentioned problems (production, storage and application of hydrogen) have been posing challenges to the scientific community for the past several decades. Particularly cost of production of hydrogen is very big challenge for scientific community.

This issue is focused on hydrogen generation from different sources other than hydrocarbon derivatives. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  •         Electrochemical water splitting/electrolysis/ oxidation
  •         Photo-electrochemical and photo-catalytic water splitting
  •         Thermochemical water splitting and biomass decomposition
  •         Biological hydrogen production
  •         Newer materials for green production of hydrogen
  •         Sea water electrolysis
  •         Modelling and simulation on electrochemical water electrolysis
