ABSTRACT: The present study provides conclusive evidence on the importance of personality traits, dimensions of psychological resilience and coping mechanisms for optimal adaptation to situations of intense psychological stress or special life situations. The data show that there is a direct relationship between some personality traits and the specific manifestations of stress, anxiety and depression, in the sense that personality influences the onset versus non-onset of the aforementioned manifestations. At the same time, the most important aspect demonstrated concerns the existence of indirect relationships between personality traits and specific manifestations of stress, anxiety and depression, which can be strongly potentiated by some coping mechanisms and some dimensions of psychological resilience, when they play or are approached as mediators, facilitating, in turn, optimal cognitive, emotional and behavioral reactions for the adaptation and integration of students. The data, information and evidence highlighted by the present study support and urge us to consider the development and implementation of appropriate programs for the development of psychological resilience, given the strength of this psychological characteristic in the optimal functioning of people involved in various situations of acute distress.
