ABSTRACT: Climate change is a material risk companies are
facing in their quest to achieve sustainable practices. As one of the
anthropogenic causals of climate change, companies are revising their policies
and practices to include and minimize climate change effects. The purpose of
this research was to investigate how Newmont
Mining Company covers environmental sustainability in their policy and pro-environmental
behaviors in their practices. The researcher selected two sustainability
secondary data of the company and conducted a content analysis of the
documents. Guided by environmentally-specific transformational
leadership model, the researcher discovered that Newmont mining company has
included environmental sustainability policies in their core values and
business strategy. Also, it was discovered that Newmont leadership is active in addressing sustainable
environmental behaviors through strategies such as recycling, reduction,
reclaiming of sites, closure of sites and reuse. Finally, it was discovered
that Newmont is compliant to international standards on climate change. It is
recommended that mining companies should make efforts to revise their policies
to be environmentally sensitive and ensure that the pro-environmental behaviors are used to
achieve the environmental sustainability compliant.
