ABSTRACT: The COVID-19 pandemic left the world in a state of shock. The education sector had to be quick in adapting itself with the new norm. Institutions of higher education had to be adjusted with the new shift from face-to-face to online mode, a shift that created many challenges particularly in the case of assessment. We keep wondering how our colleagues in different countries and across various disciplines dealt with this situation. This review paper is our attempt to find an answer to this query. In our search in Science Direct and Web of Science databases for the keywords; such as, “online assessment/evaluation” and “higher education”, we critically reviewed a total of 36 related articles. The results indicate that institutions of higher education all over the world have drastically changed their assessment practices. Some have made attempts to equip their staff with digital literacy skills to better deal with the situation; however, there have been challenges in design and implementation of online assessments.
