ABSTRACT: This paper uses a Probit
model to identify if parental preference in expenditure plays a significant
role in children schooling. The study reveals that parental preference of
education expenditure significantly influences child schooling, regardless of
wealth or community characteristics. While the preference for alcohol and
tobacco, health, and food expenditure have a negative influence on child
schooling. However, when we control poverty and community characteristics, they
show no influence. This signifies that the influence of increasing preference
in alcohol, health, and food expenditure to child schooling will only affect
poor families.
