ABSTRACT: Up to the present, nearly fourteen years have passed since China’s accession to WTO. Among the various impacts the accession may bring about, the one on State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) was most widely concerned due to their special characteristics and particular roles in Chinese economy, politics and society. This essay will briefly introduce the history of China’s SOE reforms and then summarize previous research to demonstrate the expected influences of the accession. Then privatization and removal of protective government policies will be examined in detail, followed by an evaluation of the effect of privatization.
