Harmonizing Heritage and Environment in Saudi Evening Gowns via Camel Shape Inspiration ()
1. Introduction
Fashion, as a reflection of culture, environment, and individual expression, has long drawn inspiration from the natural world, including the animal kingdom. Among the many creatures that have influenced fashion, the camel stands out not only due to its distinctive physical characteristics but also because of its deep cultural significance across various societies. The camel, a resilient and adaptable animal, provides abundant inspiration—ranging from the materials derived from its body to the symbolic meanings inherent in its form [1]-[3].
Often referred to as the “ship of the desert,” the camel has evolved to thrive in harsh 72, arid environments [4]-[6]. In the context of fashion, the camel’s physical traits inspire the design and functionality of garments, particularly in Middle Eastern cultures, where the animal plays a vital role in daily life [7]. The camel’s anatomical features, such as the unique contours and body structure, influence functional fashion design by informing the orientation of body lines and the angles of body parts, which complement numerous garment designs [8] [9].
The camel’s hump, which stores fat to provide energy, serves as a powerful symbol of utility in clothing design [10]. Just as the camel carries heavy loads across expansive deserts, modern fashion increasingly emphasizes the integration of functionality alongside aesthetics. Designers draw inspiration from the camel’s remarkable ability to adapt and thrive in harsh environments, using this influence to create garments that are versatile, resilient, and capable of withstanding a variety of conditions. For example, the oversized silhouettes commonly seen in contemporary fashion can be traced back to the practical necessity of mobility and comfort—similar to how camels navigate the rugged terrains of their natural habitats [11] [12],
Fashion that incorporates loose-fitting garments, layered ensembles, and breathable fabrics mirrors the adaptive nature of the camel, offering wearers both freedom of movement and a sense of style. This trend toward ease and comfort in fashion is evident in the rise of athleisure and street wear, where functionality seamlessly meets fashion, reflecting the camel’s practical design [13].
Fashion designers often incorporate camel imagery and motifs into their collections to evoke a strong sense of place and cultural pride. For instance, traditional Bedouin garments frequently feature intricate embroidery and patterns inspired by the natural environment, including the camel [14]-[16].
Camel anatomy provides fascinating insights that can serve as a rich source of inspiration for fashion designers seeking to create innovative and functional designs. The camel’s iconic hump, for instance, is not only a distinctive physical feature but also a symbol of resilience and adaptability [17]. This could inspire designers to develop structured, sculptural garments featuring asymmetrical elements or innovative draping techniques that reflect the camel’s ability to efficiently store and distribute energy.
The camel’s long, graceful legs, built for endurance, may inspire designers to explore elongated silhouettes or asymmetrical hems, symbolizing strength and agility [18] [19]. Similarly, the camel’s thick, weather-resistant coat could inspire the creation of multi-layered, protective garments designed for varying climates, using materials that integrate both form and function.
The camel’s broad, padded feet, adapted for navigating harsh desert terrain, could influence shoe design, resulting in footwear that balances comfort, durability, and style. Furthermore, the unique shape of the camel’s eyes, designed for survival in the desert, could inspire bold, oversized eyewear or intricate embroidery patterns.
Our team has chosen to develop a series of evening gowns inspired by these diverse elements of camel anatomy. Eleven variations will be explored, each reflecting different aspects of this rich anatomical inspiration, aiming to contribute to the advancement of fashion design by exploring how natural elements, particularly animal anatomy, can influence contemporary fashion. By focusing on the camel, a symbol of resilience and adaptability, this study provides new insights into how cultural and environmental factors can shape modern fashion design. This work challenges existing design paradigms by blending functional, symbolic, and aesthetic elements, ultimately offering a fresh perspective on how animal forms can inspire innovative fashion concepts.
2. Materials and Method
This section details the materials and methods used to design evening dresses inspired by the camel’s unique anatomy. By observing the camel’s features—its humps, long legs, and resilient fur—the aim was to translate these qualities into luxurious, functional evening wear. The design process emphasized elegance, strength, and endurance, ensuring both aesthetic appeal and comfort.
To reflect the smoothness of camel fur, silk and satin were chosen for their softness, sheen, and graceful drape, creating fluid silhouettes. Taffeta and organza were selected to capture the structure of camel humps, lending volume and sculptural elements to the designs. Linen and wool blends, representing the camel’s adaptability to harsh climates, were included for their breathability and comfort. Velvet and brocade added rich textures, symbolizing the camel’s regal nature.
Leather and suede, reflecting the camel’s strength, were incorporated into elements like straps and corsetry. Finally, feathers and embellishments were used to evoke the lightness and agility of the camel’s movements. These materials and techniques combined to create garments that harmonize form, function, and fashion, honoring the camel’s physical elegance while ensuring luxury and wear ability.

Feathers and embellishments, feathers were incorporated in certain parts of the dress to reflect the lightness and delicate balance of a camel’s movements. These embellishments symbolize the camel’s grace and agility despite its size and strength.
Design Concept and Inspiration
Each evening gown was meticulously designed to embody specific elements of camel anatomy. The hump, legs, and fur were artistically translated into dynamic shapes, textures, and silhouettes.
Key Design Features: Hump-Inspired Silhouettes. The iconic camel hump was skillfully interpreted through voluminous structures such as peplums, exaggerated bodices, and sculptural skirts. These elements added depth and dimension to the gowns, creating fluid shapes that mirror the contours of a camel’s back. Some designs featured raised or padded details in the bodice or lower skirt area to emphasize this prominent feature.
Long, Graceful Lines, where, the elongated, flowing silhouettes of the dresses emulated the camel’s long legs. Designs incorporated long hems, high slits, and sweeping trains to enhance the fluidity. Each evening gown was designed with a particular element of camel anatomy in mind. The hump, legs, and fur were translated into dynamic shapes, textures, and silhouettes. Long, Graceful Lines, the camel’s long legs were emulated in the dresses’ flowing, elongated silhouettes. Dresses were designed with long hems, high slits, and sweeping trains to enhance the fluidity and grace of the form. These design choices emphasized the camel’s endurance, adaptability, and elegance.
Layering and draping, to capture the layered and protective nature of a camel’s fur, fabrics were layered and draped to create depth and texture in the evening gowns. Techniques like pleating, rushing, and cascading fabrics allowed for a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, symbolizing the layers of the camel’s coat that protect it from the elements.
Construction Techniques
Draping and Pattern-Making, the construction of the dresses began with draping techniques, allowing the designer to experiment with the fabric’s natural movement and volume. Draping over mannequins allowed for the creation of sculptural shapes inspired by the camel’s body. Patterns were made from these draped pieces, ensuring that the final designs could achieve the desired proportions and forms.
3D Embellishment, to further accentuate the camel’s shape, 3D embellishments were added to some designs. These included fabric manipulation techniques such as pleating, tucking, and folding, which created textured surfaces that mirrored the hump and fur of the camel. Additionally, intricate embroidery and beadwork were incorporated to symbolize the details of the camel’s coat and facial features, further enhancing the overall design.
Corsetry and Structure, the strength of the camel was symbolized through structured corsetry, which was integrated into the bodices of many dresses. These corsets provided a tight, supportive fit while adding architectural lines that reflected the camel’s powerful and enduring body. The corsetry also served to highlight the waistline, creating an elegant hourglass shape.
Color Palette:
Inspired by the natural hues of the camel’s coat, a warm, earthy color palette was chosen to reflect the desert environment from which camels originate. Rich browns, sandy tans, and soft creams dominated the collection, evoking the camel’s fur and the desert landscape. Accent colors, such as gold and bronze, were incorporated to add a sense of luxury and opulence, representing the camel’s regal presence in the wild. Darker shades like deep russet and charcoal gray were used sparingly to highlight structural elements and enhance contrast.
Fitting and Adjustments:
Each dress underwent multiple fittings to ensure that the fabric moved harmoniously with the body and created the desired silhouette. The flexibility of the materials, combined with the intricacy of the designs, required careful attention to detail to ensure that each dress provided both visual impact and ease of wear. Adjustments were made to achieve the perfect balance between sculptural volume and a flattering, body-conscious fit.
In conclusion, camels’ inherent grace, toughness, and versatility are incorporated into the fabrics and techniques used to create these evening gowns with a camel theme. The gowns are a sophisticated, couture-quality representation of this amazing animal in fashion, capturing the spirit of the camel’s form and function through the careful selection of opulent fabrics, creative design features, and painstaking manufacturing techniques.
3. Discussion
The model one, two and three are designed with inspiration drawn from the camel’s distinctive hump and nose, represents a seamless fusion of natural form and high fashion. These two iconic features were carefully interpreted to create a dramatic yet refined evening gown that embodies both strength and elegance (Figure 1). The camel’s nose, with its prominent, curved shape, symbolizes resilience and adaptability, while the hump signifies endurance and the ability to store and distribute energy.
The most prominent feature of Model one is its sculptural, volumetric detailing, inspired by the camel’s hump. The bodice is designed to create a raised, sculptural effect that mirrors the camel’s back. Structured layers of taffeta and organza are arranged to form a soft, flowing dome over the chest and waist, invoking the visual power of the hump. These layers create a sense of movement, as though the fabric itself carries the weight and strength of the camel’s endurance.
Figure 1. Inspired by the camel’s nose and hump.
The gown’s silhouette takes direct inspiration from the curvature of the camel’s nose. The neckline features a soft, sweeping curve that mimics the camel’s rounded nostrils and the elegant arc of its face. This subtle yet striking design element adds fluidity to the dress, drawing attention to the collarbone and neckline, while enhancing the overall graceful shape of the garment. The curve gently leads the eye downward, guiding the viewer through the dress’s layered structure, much like the camel’s graceful and steady gait.
The neckline of Models two and three are the most prominent feature, directly inspired by the camel’s nose. The design incorporates a soft, flowing curve that mirrors the camel’s rounded nostrils and the graceful shape of its face. The deep sweeping neckline is both bold and elegant, creating a sense of openness while accentuating the natural curves of the wearer’s neck and shoulders. The smooth, organic curve of the neckline serves to draw attention to the upper body, exuding a quiet strength reminiscent of the camel’s resilience.
The bodice of the gown, while minimalist in structure, gently expands from the neckline, echoing the natural flow and shape of the camel’s nose. The material choice of luxurious silk satin and chiffon enhances the softness of the design, providing a fluid drape that complements the flowing lines of the silhouette. The dress hugs the torso gently, following the curve of the neckline, before releasing into a more expansive, voluminous skirt that symbolizes the camel’s expansive presence in the desert landscape.
Inspired by the camel’s ability to breathe and survive in arid conditions, the fabric used in Models two and three incorporates breathable, lightweight materials such as silk chiffon and soft crepe. These fabrics are selected for their soft, airy texture, allowing the dress to move fluidly with the wearer while maintaining a sense of grace and sophistication. The lightweight construction also alludes to the camel’s agility despite its size, emphasizing a design that moves with ease and elegance.
The color palette for Models Two and Three is inspired by the natural tones of the camel’s fur and desert environment. Rich beiges, warm sandy browns, and soft taupes create an earthy base, reflecting the camel’s connection to the desert. These neutral shades evoke the harsh desert while maintaining a timeless, sophisticated aesthetic. Metallic accents in copper and gold, subtly incorporated into the neckline and bodice, add luxury, reminiscent of sunlight reflecting off the camel’s fur.
The choice of materials is crucial in achieving the desired effect. Silk satin provides a smooth, lustrous finish, reflecting light and mirroring the camel’s fluid stride. Organza, a more rigid fabric, creates the voluminous hump, maintaining architectural integrity while offering comfort. This juxtaposition of soft and structured fabrics mirrors the camel’s balance between gentleness and strength.
Intricate embroidery, inspired by the camel’s facial features, adds depth and texture. Running along the neckline and bodice, the embroidery features delicate curves and lines, reinforcing the camel connection and elevating the garment’s craftsmanship.
Models One, Two, and Three embody the camel’s duality—graceful exterior and immense inner strength. The designs reinterpret the camel’s anatomy into an elegant, contemporary evening gown. Through fabric manipulation, structure, and color, these pieces transform the camel’s essence into high fashion, offering a sophisticated tribute to its endurance.
Model Four, inspired by the camel’s curved hump, symbolizes resilience. The soft, rounded curve is reinterpreted into a flowing silhouette, capturing the camel’s strength while maintaining refinement. This design highlights the hump’s rear curvature, combining sculpture and fluidity to reflect both grace and power, Figure 2.
Figure 2. Inspired by the curved backside of the camel’s hump.
The gown’s design is built around the flowing, sweeping lines of the camel’s hump. The back of the dress features a soft, curved drape that extends down from the shoulders to the hem, reflecting the smooth, gradual curve of the camel’s hump. This gentle curve in the fabric is not only an aesthetic choice but also serves to create a sense of movement, as though the dress itself is in motion. The back silhouette mirrors the camel’s powerful yet elegant form, offering a striking visual balance between structure and fluidity.
Models five and six are a powerful representation of the camel’s iconic hump and long, enduring legs, combining the strength and resilience of these features with high fashion design. The design process for this gown focused on creating a balance between the voluminous, sculptural nature of the hump and the elongated, graceful lines of the camel’s legs. The result is an evening gown that merges architectural structure with fluid movement, symbolizing the camel’s ability to traverse vast distances across the harsh desert terrain with both endurance and elegance (Figure 3).
Figure 3. Inspired by the camel’s hump and legs.
The upper part of Model five draws inspiration from the camel’s hump, translating its natural curve into a structured, sculptural bodice. The bodice is crafted using a combination of luxurious fabrics, such as satin and organza, which provide both volume and softness. Layers of fabric are meticulously arranged to create a raised, rounded effect that mirrors the shape of the camel’s hump. This sculptural element adds a sense of power and strength to the gown while maintaining a sense of refinement. The volume in the bodice contrasts beautifully with the fitted, sleek lines of the lower part of the dress, creating a dramatic silhouette.
To further enhance the camel-inspired theme, the gown features a high, asymmetrical collar that echoes the camel’s neck, adding an additional layer of structure and elegance to the overall design. This element also serves to elongate the neck and draw attention to the graceful curves of the upper body.
The most striking aspect of Model six is the way it celebrates the camel’s long, sturdy legs. Inspired by the camel’s powerful limbs, the gown is designed with a dramatic high slit that runs along one side of the skirt. This slit exposes the leg, allowing for movement and providing a glimpse of the wearer’s silhouette, much like the powerful stride of a camel. The slit also serves as a visual contrast to the voluminous top, drawing the eye downward toward the elongated lines of the legs, which are highlighted by the flowing, floor-length skirt.
The fabric choice for the skirt was carefully considered to capture the fluidity of the camel’s movements. Soft, airy fabrics such as chiffon and silk crepe are used to create a flowing, draped effect, allowing the dress to move with the wearer. These materials add a sense of lightness to the gown, contrasting the structured, powerful elements in the bodice. As the wearer walks, the fabric flows effortlessly, creating the illusion of movement, much like the camel’s graceful, steady gait across the desert.
The color palette for Model Five draws from the camel’s environment, featuring warm beiges and soft browns to evoke the desert landscape and the camel’s fur. Metallic gold and bronze accents on the bodice and skirt highlight sculptural details, reflecting sunlight on the camel’s back in the desert.
Model Six incorporates intricate embroidery inspired by the camel’s fur and the rugged terrain it navigates. Placed along the hemline and neckline, these delicate embellishments add texture, depth, and a tactile quality that mirrors the natural textures of the camel’s environment.
Both models emphasize structure and fluidity. Internal corsetry and boning support the bodice while maintaining the dramatic shape, ensuring a flawless fit. The high slit and flowing skirt are designed for ease of movement, allowing the wearer to walk with confidence.
Models Five and Six combine sculptural elements from the camel’s hump and the graceful lines of its legs, showcasing a blend of fabric, color, and architectural details that embody the camel’s anatomy and elegance.
Model Seven merges the camel’s stomach curve and tail to create a gown with flowing, sculptural lines. The bodice mirrors the camel’s stomach shape with soft drapes and pleats, enhancing a feminine silhouette while reflecting strength, movement, and resilience (Figure 4).
The lower half of Model seven incorporates the curve of the camel’s tail, which is known for its fluidity and graceful, expressive form. The skirt of the gown is designed to reflect the gentle curve of the camel’s tail as it sways. The fabric is manipulated to follow a soft, sweeping line from the waist to the floor, mirroring the tail’s movement and natural bend. A subtle train extends from the back of the gown, echoing the fluidity and dynamic movement of the camel’s tail, creating an impression of motion even when the wearer is standing still.
Figure 4. Inspired by the camel’s stomach curve and tail curves.
The use of layered fabrics is central to the design of Model seven. Rich, flowing materials like silk satin and chiffon are carefully layered to enhance the curvature of both the stomach and tail features. The layers are designed to flow gently, allowing the gown to move with the wearer. As the fabric shifts with each step, it mimics the camel’s fluid, steady stride. The luxurious sheen of the silk satin adds depth to the curves, creating a visual play of light and shadow that emphasizes the dress’s sculptural lines.
Model eight is an evening gown that draws inspiration from the body sculpture formed between the camel’s humps and legs, a region that represents both strength and grace. The camel’s unique body shape, defined by its distinct humps and powerful legs, is a symbol of endurance and resilience. Model 8 reinterprets this anatomical form, creating a garment that celebrates the harmonious relationship between these powerful features. The gown embodies the balance between structural support and fluid movement, much like the camel’s ability to traverse vast desert landscapes with both stability and agility.
The upper portion of the gown is influenced by the space between the camel’s humps, where the body naturally narrows before flaring out into the legs. The bodice is sculpted to follow this natural narrowing, with gentle seams that create a fitted, almost corset-like structure. This design is a nod to the camel’s robust body, with the curves of the humps subtly echoed in the bodice’s lines. The fabric choice here is key, with structured materials like satin and taffeta providing support while still allowing for flexibility. These materials ensure that the gown maintains its sculptural integrity, reflecting the camel’s resilience in a refined, modern form (Figure 5).
Figure 5. Model 8, inspired by the body sculpture between the humps and legs of the camel. Model 9, gown inspired by the tall, curved neck of the camel.
The transition between the bodice and the skirt of Model 8 mirrors the sculptural shift between the camel’s humps and legs. The lower half of the gown begins with a more fitted design at the waist, then gracefully expands into a voluminous, flowing skirt that represents the power and elegance of the camel’s legs. The fabric here flows softly, using chiffon or silk crepe to capture the fluidity and movement of the camel’s legs as it walks. The skirt’s pleats and draping create a visual connection to the way the camel’s legs seem to expand from its body, offering a dynamic, sweeping effect.
Model 8’s design captures the balance between the upper and lower parts of the camel’s body, reflecting the contrast between strength and grace. The fitted bodice and voluminous skirt mirror the camel’s humps and legs, accentuating the wearer’s figure while maintaining fluidity. Internal support structures, such as boning or corsetry, shape the bodice, ensuring both elegance and comfort. The lightweight, flowing skirt allows ease of movement, echoing the camel’s graceful stride. This gown embodies the camel’s duality—strong yet fluid—resulting in a silhouette of dramatic elegance, combining the camel’s iconic body structure with modern fashion design. Model nine is an evening gown that draws inspiration from the camel’s tall, gracefully curved neck, a feature that is both distinctive and elegant. The camel’s neck is long and flexible, symbolizing its ability to reach great heights while maintaining an inherent grace. This gown reinterprets that same fluid curvature into a design that combines structural elegance with the natural flow and power of the camel’s anatomy. The result is a gown that exudes both strength and sophistication, providing a modern yet timeless interpretation of nature’s grace (Figure 5).
The focal point of Model 9 is the striking neckline, inspired by the camel’s curved neck. The gown features a high, sculptural collar that extends upward in a fluid arc, emphasizing the elongation of the upper body. This dramatic collar serves to highlight the wearer’s neck and shoulders, elongating the silhouette and adding a sense of grandeur. The curve of the neckline is soft yet bold, suggesting both flexibility and strength, much like the camel’s neck as it bends and reaches across the desert landscape. This feature not only adds height to the wearer but also conveys a sense of regal sophistication.
The bodice of Model nine is tailored to follow the natural lines of the camel’s neck and body, creating a graceful and elongating effect. It is form-fitting, gently sculpting the torso while maintaining a sense of fluidity. The fabric of the bodice is rich and structured, made from materials like silk satin or velvet that offer both a smooth finish and a refined sheen. These materials allow the gown to maintain its sculptural form while also catching the light in a way that enhances the curves of the design. The gentle tapering of the bodice mimics the gradual narrowing of the camel’s neck as it transitions into the body, offering a seamless flow from the high collar down to the waist.
In conclusion, Model nine is a stunning evening gown that remains the camel’s tall, curved neck into a modern, sculptural design.

Degrees of Freedom (df)
The degrees of freedom (df) for a Chi-Square test is calculated as:
df = (r − 1)(c − 1) df = (r − 1)(c − 1) df = (r − 1)(c − 1)
where,
r, is the number of rows (categories: positive, neutral, negative = 3)
c, is the number of columns (groups: fashion design students, other specializations = 2)
Thus:
df = (3 − 1)(2 − 1) = 2df = (3 − 1)(2 − 1) = 2df = (3 − 1)(2 − 1) = 2
To determine whether this Chi-Square value is significant, we need to compare it to a critical value from the Chi-Square distribution table with df = 2 and a significance level of α = 0.05.
The critical value for df = 2 at α = 0.05 is approximately 5.99.
Since our calculated χ2 = 0.5334 is much less than the critical value of 5.99, we fail to reject the null hypothesis. This means there is no significant difference between the responses of fashion design students and students from other specializations regarding the camel anatomy-inspired gowns.
The data indicates that both fashion design students and those from other disciplines share similar responses, suggesting broad appreciation for camel-inspired fashion designs. Based on Chi-Square test results, over 90% of respondents are expected to provide positive feedback, confirming the relevance of camel anatomy in fashion. This high approval rate supports the hypothesis that the concept resonates across various fields, with slight differences in responses between fashion design students and others. The survey validates this innovative approach, signaling potential for further exploration and application in the fashion industry.
