ABSTRACT: The Republic of Burundi provides constitutional protection for the environment and the right to the environment. As part of this protection, various laws have been enacted to protect the environment. The Environmental Criminal Law plays its part in this protection. It is a law with its own peculiarities that feeds the repressive apparatus in the fight to protect the environment. However, the statistical data available from the courts, while confirming the prosecution and conviction of environmental criminals, show that the level of repression is low compared to the statistics for cases involving other recorded offenses.
