Special Issue on Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is an idiopathic disease caused by a dysregulated immune response to host intestinal microflora. The two most common inflammatory bowel diseases are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The main symptoms of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are similar. They include abdominal pain, recurring or bloody diarrhoea, weight loss and extreme tiredness. Although the diseases have some features in common, there are some important differences. Crohn’s disease most commonly affects the last part of the small intestine and parts of the large intestine while ulcerative colitis is restricted to the colon and the rectum. There is currently no cure for ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. Medication is the regular treatment for these disease.
