ABSTRACT: Western and Chinese cultures have great distinctions. Culture is
generally divided into material, institutional and spiritual cultures, and they
are usually correlated. By analyzing two differences in material culture,
including the differences in architecture and painting in China and the West,
diverse modes of thinking in Western and Chinese cultures can be figured out.
Westerners hold a philosophy that humans and the beauty of humans should be
valued while Chinese people believe that the harmonious coexistence of man and
nature should be given priority. Through this discussion, we can have a better
understanding of Western and Chinese cultures and distinguish them.
