ABSTRACT: We present a coherent picture of the functioning of a Roman infantry
legion based on a systematic procedure of finding weak points in the enemy formation
as a destination for persistent attacks. We conjecture that this tactic was a
robust and resource-efficient way to victory. Its discovery could be one of the
primary reasons for developing a manipular legion, a unique way of fighting
that shaped Roman warfare.
