Abstract: Soil organic carbon pool is the largest carbon reservoir in the terrestrial ecosystems. Hence, it is very important for agri-forestry production and regional land-use planning to fraction and quantitatively assess soil carbon pools. In this study, advanced research measures of fractionation and quantitative assessment of soil carbon pools were summarized, including physical protection fractionation, mathematical model of carbon mineralization kinetics, two-step hydrolysis with H2 SO4 , oxygenation with different concentration of KMnO4, 14C dating technique and so on. Finally, the future development tendency and key research projects were analyzed in order to provide theoretical basis for deepened research and scientific management of soil organic carbon pools.
