Abstract: A simulation of pedestrians’ crossing behavior at signalized intersections is presented based on a cellular automata model which is improved from the N-S model in this paper. This model can simulate pedestrian movement with different walk velocities and the influence of vehicles on pedestrians is considered. Some evolution rules assigned in the model include rules for pedestrians, vehicles and conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles. The open boundary condition is adopted in the model. The number of pedestrians and vehicles, the conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles, the conflict delays and the red light delays can be obtained through the simulation. The simulation results show that the model can describe the interactions between vehicle and pedestrian. It makes a foundation for analyzing the pedestrian crossing design influences on traffic safety and operation.
