Abstract: A survey on China rural laborers' off-farm employment has showed that there are three features in the employment structure of Chinalaborers: low quality structure, single geographical structure and poor industrial structure. It has a long way to achieve the integrative goal of urban-rural labor market, and the irrational employment structure will greatly increase the income gap between urban and rural workers, which in turn impede the coordinated urban-rural development. And, through using the related statistical data, this paper analyzes the evolution trend of the employment of urban and rural laborers inChinaduring 1978-2010, including the urban-rural structure, the ownership structure and the industrial structure of employment. The results show that the optimization trend of employment structure has emerged inChina, and how the trend will develop in the future is greatly rely on the government’s further optimization on the system.
