Abstract: In order to reduce the cumulative errors relating to the processing direction, structural texture and particle in the homogeneous region which was caused by conventional error diffusion method, the class ma- trix which is used in dot diffusion method is introduced in error diffusion arithmetic to determine the order of pixel procession, and offer a new error diffusion halftoning algorithm based on Hilbert matrix and image content matrix. The new algorithm get the global threshold of the image by using the global iterative method first, and then determine the class matrix based on Hilbert curve and image content which give priority to the edge of the image and brightness uniformity region. Experimental results show that the new algorithm en- hance the capability of holding the edge of the original image ,weaken the error accumulation problem, re- duce the “Moire” and enhance the image's overall tonal.
