Abstract: Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) has found its use under urban mass transit condition in recent years. In this paper, the MAC layer fast handoff for IEEE 802.11-based WMN was studied. Two types of im- provement were proposed for MAC layer fast handoff algorithm, including selective background scanning and buffer mechanism. There, selective scanning reduces the number of channels to be scanned; background scanning allows the mobile Mesh client to perform channel scanning prior to handoff process; buffer mecha- nism allows a certain amount of packets to be buffered while the Mesh client is scanning a different channel or the network breaks. The proposed scheme can significantly reduce the scanning time, as well as the packet loss, and maintain a constant data rate. Tests have been conducted to evaluate the performance of the pro- posed scheme. Test results for this scenario show that the handoff latency can be limited within 10ms and even shorter.
