This paper aims to discover the current situation of on-the-job managers, find factors influencing the competency of managers in small-and-medium-sized enterprises. Using research methods of literature analysis, qualitative & quantitative research, this paper carries out empirical study on the competency of small-and-medium-sized enterprises with the adoption of behavior event interview (BEI), checklist and factor analysis. Several crucial conclusions are drawn as follows: namely, power of influence, planning ability, organizational perceptivity, self-confidence, organizational commitment, foresight, group leadership, profession, decision making, continuous improvement, introspectiveness, self-control and information feedback.
