Abstract: Three Gorges Project not only brought enormous economic and social benefits, but also brought some negative impacts on the ecological environment of reservoir and the areas around it. It increases the pressures on ecological environment and agricultural production, and deepens the reservoir’s non-point source pollution. With the unceasingly increasing storage capacity as well as economic development in the valley, it is likely to trigger non-point source pollution in Three Gorges Reservoir, threatening the social security and environment in the reservoir area. It is necessary to study the inducing factors in order to prevent its occurrence. The article analyzes the status and impacts of non-point source pollution in Three Gorges Reservoir. Based on it, five inducing factors including pollutant discharges, river course hydrology, physical geography, climate and social economy are discussed. The case of Algae blooms in the Shennong River is analyzed to illuminate the interactions between the five inducing factors. Finally, our results indicate that targeted measures in these five aspects mentioned above should be taken to keep effective prevention, early-warn, and pre-control of the non-point source pollution.
