Abstract: Rural housing is often seriously damaged in earthquake due to its insufficiency in seismic capability, which leads to significant loss of human lives and properties. An on-site survey carried out in this study demonstrates that the existing rural housing is generally lack of sufficient seismic capability. In view of those issues found in the survey, this study is devoted to develop corresponding seismic methods for rural housing. Different reinforcing schemes for brick masonry walls are compared through a pseudo-static testing. The systematic analysis on experimental outputs supplies the basis for the reinforcement of rural housing in building new countryside
