A geometry model surface can be considered as an unknown smooth manifold, on top of which a local height is placed. Since the base surface and the height are both unknown, it is a challenge to extract the base surface from original model surface. We propose a new approach to pick-up the base surface, the key steps are as follows: First, the normal of base surface is estimated from the model surface’s normal; Second, a optimization equation about the local height is established by analyzing the height’s relationship between the adjacent vertexs. Finally, the optimization equation is solved using least-square method. Once the height of the base is determined, the base surface is also obtained. We demonstrate the power of the algorithms through a number of application, the results show that it could extract the base surface more effectively and quickly.
