Abstract: Node localization is a fundamental and important technology in Wireless sensor network (WSN). Position and orientation of individual nodes in ad hoc sensor networks are useful for both service and application implementation. Services that can be enabled by availability of position include routing and querying. At application level, localization in sensor networks is a prerequisite for associating the sensed phenomenon to a particular location. In designing localization schemes, tradeoff between the cost required for localization and resulting accuracy of localization is especially important. There are two categories of localization algorithm: range-based and range-free. Due to hardware resources constraints of high cost and large size, range-based localization scheme is not desirable compared with range-based localization scheme. Because coarse accuracy is sufficient, solutions in range-free localization are being pursued as a cost-effective alternative to more expensive range-based approaches. Therefore, some typical range-free localization technologies are analyzed and the performance of each one is compared. Finally, how to select appropriate localization scheme according to circumstances and application is pointed out.
