The 17th IAPRI World Conference on Packaging is a collaboration between the International Association of Packaging Research Institutes (IAPRI) and the China Packaging Research Test Center (CPRTC), Jinan University, Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication, Jiangnan University, Tianjin University of Science and Technology and China National Export Commodities Packaging Research Institute. The conference theme, ‘Packaging Achievements through Scientific and Technological Innovations’ emphasises the importance of research as a catalyst in new and emerging applications for both industry and the public sector. It is therefore very appropriate and relevant that we are holding this conference in China in 2010, as we recognise the importance and fast growth of packaging research in academic and research institutes in China. In this conference there are over 100 oral presentations and 182 posters from researchers in more than 15 countries around the world. Presentations topics range from topics such as performance and material properties to sustainable and design issues. Most of the presentations are in this volume of the proceedings. IAPRI was established in 1971 to develop the packaging collaboration and exchange between packaging research institutes. It now has 76 members in 29 countries including institutes, academic organisations and commercial organisations carrying out packaging research and education. Its goal is to further promote packaging research through its annual events and through a range of other activities such as working groups and the development of international exchanges of researchers. Full details of our activities and an opportunity to join IAPRI are given on www.iapriweb.org Many people have worked very hard to make this conference possible. I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the Mr Li Hua and his staff at CPRTC in coordinating and compiling the programme and this volume of work. In addition, I would like to thank the members of the International Scientific Committee chaired by Prof Zhi-Wei Wang from Jinan University
