Special Issue on Psychology of Self-Control

Self-control separates us from our ancient ancestors and the rest of the animal kingdom, thanks to our large prefrontal cortex. It is the ability to subdue our impulses in order to achieve longer-term goals. Rather than responding to immediate impulses, we can plan, evaluate alternative actions, and, often enough, avoid doing things we'll later regret. The ability to exert self-control is typically called willpower. It is what allows us to direct our attention, and it underlies all kinds of achievement. There is significant debate in science as to whether or not willpower is a finite resource. Studies demonstrate that exercising willpower makes heavy demands on mental energy, notably on reserves of glucose, the brain's preferred fuel, creating ego depletion. The goal of this special issue is to provide a platform to explore the role of psychology of self-control.

In this special issue, we invite front-line researchers and authors to submit original research and review articles that explore psychology of self-control. In this special issue, potential topics include, but are not limited to:

    • The power of self-control
    • Explored ways of improving self-control
    • Self-control is strongly associated with success
    • The science of self-control
    • Techniques to boost your self-control
    • Self-affirmation in self-control

Authors should read over the journal’s For Authors carefully before submission. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal’s Paper Submission System.

Please kindly specify the Special Issue” under your manuscript title. The research field “Special Issue Psychology of Self-Control” should be selected during your submission.
