ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the promotion of sustainable urban development in the case of Diamniadio, a new town near Dakar, Senegal. Using a normative approach and relevant practices, the major question is to understand how a new city project can adapt to the new city-production model. Urban planning consists of a project-oriented approach which tends towards sustainable production in the city. A sustainable production of the city must include resources for the promotion of sustainable urban development, the spatial transposition of which constitutes a major challenge. To be viable, the Diamniadio sustainable city project must take accommodate the local landscape and environmental, as well as social and land tenure factors related to Senegalese history and culture.
