Topical application of conventional eye drops has been the prevalent route of ocular drug administration with good patient compliance. However, multiple physiological barriers in the eye significantly limit therapeutic efficacy of drugs. Recently, nanoparticle-mediated drug delivery system has emerged as a promising and effective tool to overcome the limitations of conventional drug formulations in the eye. This brochure sought to summarize and analyze the characteristics of several commonly-used nanoparticle-based delivery systems as well as the applications of the drug-loaded nanoparticles to the treatment of blinding ocular diseases, including inflammatory/ immune, vascular, and degenerative eye diseases.
