Abstract: Learning in practice is important for information security students. Open source software can providestudents with available and readable source codes to use, analyze, change, and improve software. Basedon open source software, the design and operation of practice teaching projects is proposed in this paper. Byanalyzing, extracting and recompiling the necessary crypto-codes in OpenSSL, the students’ abilities to collaborativelydeveloping security software tools can be improved. By repeating the process of scanning-evaluating-patching the Windows XP systems based on VMware software and Nessus scanner, the experiencesabout the security threats introduced by system vulnerabilities can be pinpointed. Some feedbacksobtained from the conducted teaching processes are discussed. It shows that our proposed method can helpinformation security students to enhance their security experiences and improve their competitions in jobmarkets.
