Abstract: Vinyl polymer poly(dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride /acrylic acid/2-hydroxyethyl acrylate/ acrylamide) P(DMDAAC-AA-AM-HEA) was synthesized via free radical polymerization, and then P(DMDAAC-AA-AM-HEA) was characterized by FT-IR, and XRD. Moreover, P (DMDAAC-AA-AM-HEA) was applied in leather tanning process and then the thermal and mechanical properties of the resultant leather were measured. FTIR results revealed that P (DMDAAC-AA-AM-HEA) was synthesized successfully. The crystallinity of P (DMDAAC-AA-AM-HEA) is 8.44% according to the XRD patterns. The results showed that the shrinkage temperature, thick-increase, mechanical properties of the leather tanned by P (DMDAAC-AA-AM-HEA) combined with 2% chromate tannage were far higher than 2% chromate tanned leather.
