Abstract: The most common features of blades which are affected by plant diseases and insect pests have been introduced, the internal relationship between the change of color of the blade surface and the sharp change of grayscale values of the pixels of digital images has been connected, the measure of identifying the edge information of blade surface and locating the affected areas have been analyzed rely on the toolbox of the mathematic software MATLAB. Different operators’ edge detection abilities have been compared under the condition of noise. Discussions have been made in aspects such as the principle of edge detection of blade surface, the features of different edge detection operators and so on. A conclusion has been made that the best edge detection algorithm has a quite satisfying performance , as well as the excellent feature against noise such as ‘Gaussian’ and “salt and pepper” in plant diseases and insect pests detection.
