Abstract: The development of network communication technology provided the basis of realizing time synchronization in substation through network time protocol. Characteristics and basic principles of several common network time synchronzation protocols were introduced, in which the PTP synchronous mechanism based on IEEE1588 precision time protocol was emphatically analyzed. The development trend of network communication in 500kV substation and the accuracy of time synchronization required by different equipments in substation were discussed. Based on test data of IEEE1588 protocol, the feasibility of realizing time synchronization through network in conventional and digital substation were analyzed. Finally, according to electric power industry standards, several applications of network time synchronization protocol in 500kV substation were discussed.
