Abstract: An accurate and reliable personal identification technology becomes more and more important. While so many drawbacks in traditional methods, people turn to biometrics, a new research field with bright future. Fingerprint identification, one of the most important branches in biometrics, is showing with its unique advantages. Fingerprint enhancement is important for improving the accuracy of minutiae extraction, even for the total automated fingerprint identification system (AFIS). Firstly, the local orientation and frequency of fingerprint image were computed. Gabor filter also has characters of direction and frequency selectivity. The local direction and frequency of the fingerprint image were used as the Gabor filter function's parameters, and then compute the convolution of the Gabor filter and the fingerprint image. In this way, the noise from the fingerprint image is removed effectively. So the aim of enhance the fingerprint image be got. Secondly, the OPTA algorithm be used to thin the fingerprint’s ridges. MATLAB experimental results show that the fingerprint enhancement algorithm based on the even-symmetric Gabor filter applied performed well and improve the quality of input fingerprint image of AFIS.
